Elephant plot

"An ordinary high school day. Except that it's not."

Elephant shows you a 'normal' school day at an American high school. This day is filled with schoolwork, football, gossip and fun. For every student we meet, high school is a different experience: stimulating, fun, traumatic, lonely and hard. Stimulating and fun because they meet their friends again and traumatic and hard because the youngsters are followed in the hours before a dramatic carnage.

This film is still standing. Gus Van Sant's approach is therefore timeless. Even though it is specifically about the events in 1999. The explanation around the title is a bit far fetched I think, but it gives a nice title.

The film focuses on the events leading up to the shooting. This shows a range of students that you get to know for a while. They sometimes cross each other, which brings the mosaic into a whole. Small simple things that also ensure that it seems to be just another day for them. In addition, you have the perpetrators who plan this day, but the cause leaves Gus Van Sant open. He makes no judgment here, which is difficult in real life. This makes the film even more timeless.

Beautiful film that lets you blow through the school like a wind through the long shots. The characters are completely unaware of what is to come and for once it is just an asset that you as a viewer know that. Or in very broad terms. You can feel the tension in the air. The final shootings are quite dry, nice that Van Sant ensures that it is not a sensation, but just something that happened. And I think that's actually the case. Of course with terrible consequences and casualties. But the disciples will not have known for a long time what happened to them, until it was too late. And for the perpetrators, this was simply an execution of their plan. Not emotional revenge or sensational war, but what they were going to do.

Good film by Van Sant that refers to the tragedy in Columbine. Where Michael Moore looks for causes and explanations and finds them from his perspective, Van Sant remains steadfast here and does not look for answers to the why question. The film is rather observational in nature and you experience the events. A bit docu-like too with some static images and young people floating through the image.

Acting with many amateurs to perhaps emphasize the authenticity. Everyday scenes of life as it is for young people in a high school. They certainly weren't bad. The climax itself that you know is coming is very secular, without emotion, rebellion, without judgment too. But purely through this film also raises many questions because Van Sant consciously avoids them. Good approach and good movie. Beautiful!
