Murder, adultery, lesbianism, prostitution: life was as boring almost 100 years ago as it is today. With the not unattractive Louise Brooks in the leading role in a German film

Frank Wedekind's two plays formed the basis for this silent drama, for an opera by Alban Berg and for a character that continues to appeal to the imagination. Lulu is compared to Pandora. She is accused of having saddled the world with all the vices and is convicted of manslaughter. In both cases it is unjustified. She only used her seduction skills to survive in a decadent society. In the Weimar Republic there was a decline in bourgeois morality. Everything revolved around sex and money. There were revues with scantily clad dancers; there was prostitution and human trafficking. Characters search each other's pockets for money. Dr. Schön wants to keep up appearances by marrying the minister's daughter, but he soon falls through the basket. Belgian Alice Roberts wears a tuxedo to portray a lesbian character. Taboos were broken; in the US only a heavily censored version was shown.

Louise Brooks started out as a dancer and Hollywood actress, but her journey to Germany gave her her two best roles. With her shingle bob or Lulu haircut, she was a style icon. Makeup emphasized her dark eyes. She was wild, seductive and natural. Close-ups and mesh filters draw attention to her facial expression, varying between sweet, vicious and terrified. Pabst already knew very well how to use light, shadow, mirrors, smoke and fog to create the right atmosphere. Set pieces often add something to the scene, such as the portrait of Lulu as a kind of harlequin with a guitar. It's a highlight of the 1920s in a style that would influence the next two decades.

What a discovery this film is. A masterpiece of early German cinema that can stand alongside the work of Murnau and Lang. I had already read that Louise Brooks is an iconic femme fatale here and she lives up to it. She sparkles off the screen like uncorked champagne. Rarely seen in silents or afterwards. It has a very dark story and is also melodramatic, which you often see at that time. It's also nice to see that roaring twenties lifestyle in the casinos rolling across the screen. There is a decadent atmosphere and politically these were the last years of the Weimar Republic before Hitler came to power. It is also a story with a controversial side, for example. the lesbian subplot.

I was familiar with the Greek myth of Pandora's Box, but in this film and the way it was presented... that Pandora/Lulu/Louise Brooks box took on a very sexual meaning. This is refined.
