My first Bergman, and it was visually not too bad for me, given the year. The lighting was sometimes very nice with some close-ups of faces, but for the rest there is not much to enjoy visually or it must be the beautiful women. The scene of the parade that interrupts the performance was the most impressive in my opinion, especially because of the music, but if you think at that moment that more can be done visually with different camera perspectives, something is wrong. With the dance of death at the end, more could have been done than a far-zoomed shot. I already mentioned the music, it was sometimes impressive, especially the Dies Irae theme that comes up several times, but unfortunately a bit sparse, so that the scenes between the centers of gravity lose atmosphere.
I can't do much with the theme, although I can imagine that the film touches you very much if you watch it while you are struggling with the same questions. For me, a film with questions of life does not stand a chance in advance, given the fact that I can appreciate a film like Tenshi no Tamago. Perhaps because there I am so carried away in the strange world of that film that those questions feel relevant at that moment. In any case, The Seventh Seal fails at that.
2* for the beautiful lighting and the beautiful women.

Yes, the film has everything that is ascribed to it.
The power of some scenes is indescribable. For me personally, the scene in which Antonius Block goes to confession is the highlight of the film, as it gives us a glimpse into his thoughts. Turns out he doesn't want to die until he has some certainty about god's existence. Only when he sees a witch dying at the stake does he realize that he kept asking the wrong question. If God exists, why doesn't He help man? Why does he let man die? Not even the devil comes to help that poor child! In any case, man is on his own.
Other strong scenes: The procession, the final scene, the witch at the stake.
Everything really fits in those moments. The shots of the faces, playing with black/white/shadow and light, the dialogues, ...

Unfortunately, there are also moments that take the momentum out of the film. Could Jof & Mia not be given another profession? The whole story with the farrier's wife could also be left out, because it had no added value.

That's why I 'only' end up with a 3.5.

Just going.

Earlier this year I saw my first film by Ingmar Bergman: the terrible Fanny och Alexander. That was a battle of wear and tear to sit out, partly due to a long playing time. A long running time is certainly not in the way of this film. By making The Seventh Seal a compact film, it is soon much easier to digest.

And that is welcome, because although the semi-philosophical quack is not that interesting, the film does try to have a certain layering. As a result, it can feel quite heavy, also thematically, but mainly because of the sad atmosphere, skilfully rendered by that beautiful black and white. After all, as a crusader you don't want to come home to a country in decline.

Metaphorically I must have missed quite a bit. Nor am I the viewer to want to see everything in the light of some important morality. In any case, it didn't really detract from the viewing experience.

2.5
