Clara Sola plot
Clara, 40, leads a secluded life in which she feels a certain connection with nature and with God. She is seen by the villagers as a healer, a gift with which she supports her family. When Clara is attracted to her cousin's new sweetheart, she no longer feels the compulsion to repress her sexuality. Clara also seems to be pushing her boundaries on a physical and mystical level. In the search for her true self, Clara increasingly withdraws from her role as a saint.

Beautiful magical-realistic film about a mentally retarded woman who – probably because she is still a child mentally – has a strong bond with nature, so with the earth, the water, the insects and certainly also with the horse Yuca. She is, in fact, pure nature herself, which makes her seem to have healing and supernatural powers within her, through which her religious mother uses her as a kind of Lourdes who would heal sick, desperate tourists. Probably because she is nature but also to protect her, her mother treats her like an animal that must be thus controlled and locked up so that Clara for example not only ('sola' in Spanish) is allowed outside an imaginary fence and her somewhat uninhibited sexuality must be suppressed. But when a young man temporarily works with them, he pushes her to gently break her imposed restrictions which brings quite a bit but also brings her freedom (to do 'sola' things) and self-healing. The film may be anti-religious (because faith forces you and doesn't let you be yourself) but at the same time very spiritual (with the pagan message that we have to embrace nature within ourselves) in which the nature around the house is also enchantingly portrayed. .

Psychological drama with a dash of magical realism about a somewhat simple soul, who, in spite of her stern mother, discovers her sexuality in fits and starts. Very fine directorial debut by Nathalie Álvarez Mesén with an impressive tour-de-force by Wendy Chinchilla Araya, who is also making his debut in the title role. The final scene is the proverbial icing on the cake.

Once you are canonized, it turns out that it hangs around your neck like a millstone. No lack of attention for Clara, who is repeatedly instructed to lead the way in the many prayers and services that the small remote mountain village has to offer. For example, it is not appropriate to have a relationship and her mother also thinks it is not done that she has herself operated on the back. You have to be content with what God has given you, period. And when your hormones kick in, the fence is completely off the dam.
Beautiful fine arthouse with beautiful acting and cinematography. Religion and spirituality are central to this film, in which freedom is curtailed by the excess of these themes. Nobody sees a problem with it, except for the lonely “Sola” Clara…
