Nice movie with a strong cast.

The good thing about this movie is that it doesn't take itself seriously at all, even though this story is based on truth.

Both Hanks, Roberts and Hoffman (what an actor) play totally over the top, something this movie does well.

The film has a fast pace, there is a lot of talking, but it is all manageable. The satire that drips from some scenes is strong, especially the scene where Charlie is being spanked by the Pakistani president and senior officers is very witty.

Recommend this, more than enough.

The cast had my attention, the story appealed less to me. That's why I waited quite a long time before watching this, because I've known the film since the theatrical release. It turns out that my expectations beforehand pretty much matched what I ultimately thought of the film.

The film starts out interesting and manages to stay that way across the board, but with bits that let it sink in and let my attention fade away. Not a big deal in itself, because the film manages to pick itself up again and again. This is mainly due to the roles of Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who both manage to be cynical on several occasions and thus manage to (slightly) laugh. Of course, it also helps that the whole situation is rather absurd, which makes it somewhat comical anyway. I personally don't dislike Julia Roberts, but I thought her part here was very small. She added little.

I wasn't familiar with the real story at all, but I didn't mind that much. It was a surprise to me where the film would go. Charlie Wilson is nicely portrayed in this film anyway (not completely the 'good guy', but not through and through either). All in all, it was an enjoyable evening. Not a film that keeps the same level from start to finish, but has enough to offer in between to remain entertaining.

3*

"It seems to me lookin' around, that it's almost all women workin' here, and that they're all very pretty. Is that common?" Charlie's Angel #1: "Well... Congressman Wilson, he has an expression. He says uhh, 'You can teach 'em to type, but you can't teach 'em to grow tits.' " – The fond memories I had of the first time I saw this film are confirmed this second viewing, thanks in particular to a hilarious Philip Seymour Hoffman (especially in that already mentioned scene where he has to leave the room for a while) and his flashy dialogues with the equally excellent Tom Hanks. However, it is precisely those dialogues (by Aaron Sorkin) that at the same time turn this into such a slick drama that the humor somewhat gets in the way of the message, and that is disappointing.
