Call Me by Your Name plot

"Is it better to speak or die?"

Sensitive and cultured Elio is the only child of the American-Italian-French Perlman family. He is looking forward to another lazy summer at his parents' villa in the beautiful and peaceful Italian countryside. Then Oliver arrives, an academic who comes to help his father with an investigation. A sudden and intense romance develops between the adolescent boy and the summer guest on the Italian Riviera.

“Nature has cunning ways of finding our weakest spot.”

Sometimes it's hard to put into words what makes a movie so special. Call Me by Your Name is sultry, summery, seductive and ultimately heartbreaking. The short-lived love between Elio and Oliver really gets under your skin, and when you finally see Elio crying in front of the fireplace you really feel the pain that everyone has made at one time or another. In any case, I immediately thought of my first girlfriend (ended in tears), and that is what makes Call Me by Your Name so special and recognizable. Guadagnino takes you slowly into the love story of Elio and Oliver, and the acting and summery images of Italian villages, lakes and cities do the rest. The playing time of more than two hours is over in no time.

The speech by Elio's father (the wonderful Stuhlbarg) more than lives up to the high expectations, and it's rare that the ending credits deliver perhaps the most beautiful scene in the film. And there is also the music written and composed especially for this film by Sufjan Stevens. Mystery of Love and Visions of Gideon… Unparalleled. Call Me by Your Name feels like Elio's dream and very fond memory, and I have a feeling Guadagnino envisioned it exactly the same.

I thought the ending was very beautiful and that's why my rating was increased a bit, those beautiful winter pictures suddenly, the father confessing something to his son, that last shot of him staring into the fire.. He looked like a young Marc Almond. But in the end, the movie didn't really touch me. If only the whole movie had been like it was in the end.
The intellectual was indeed too thick: the books, the music, that little difference of opinion about the origin of the word apricot, a heated discussion at the table about politics..
The colors are striking. Beautiful that mint green, it's just a shame that it's such a trend color again. You often see it on church towers, on old statues.. Doesn't that have something to do with copper? In any case, the water looked beautiful; never seen such a beautiful color of water.

But it's slowly becoming a cliché that in movies about gays it should always be about the first budding love, about coming out and how all those stupid straight people will react to that. The love story isn't really original either, I immediately thought of 'For a lost soldier', which I think is better. The infatuation does come here and there, as in the disco scene, when the American is dancing on the dance floor and the boy is watching from the sidelines. But the American seems to live in his own little world, as if he doesn't want to surrender completely to love. I understand that it is a bit more complicated for him, he says at a certain point: 'My father would send me to an institution.. ', but still. The love scenes look quite clumsy and prudish, weird even, as if the director didn't really dare and doesn't want to offend anyone.

He was wearing a nice Talking Heads shirt by the way. Had a shirt like that before, but from The Cure.
