I'm starting to see the thread running through those old acclaimed Hollywood classics.

Again and again those wooden claps with their rehearsed put together dialogues that come out as if they have been rehearsed for days. Now you also have people who are like that in real life, but they are by no means my favorite species.

Bogart still has the disadvantage of having a terrible voice, which makes his character completely uninteresting from the first second. Bergman can actually do nothing about it and is not much more than the wavering love rag.

That then drags on to a conclusion that unfolds far too late. The cap with the steely face and the inevitable gingerbread heart does what a hero should do and immediately ends the film. About 102 minutes late in my opinion.

Boring film that really doesn't manage to be interesting anywhere. For fans of the old dialogues, as far as I'm concerned about the dullest thing I've encountered in the world of cinema.

Revisit this movie again. It was about time because my review from about 10 years ago provoked quite a few reactions. I was discussing dating with Casablanca at the time and I struggled to explain why I thought the film was dated. I now find all nonsense explanations in retrospect. A film is about how you experience a film, the mood that a film brings about in you. And in that case there is absolutely nothing wrong with Casablanca. Beautiful romantic scenes with Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) and Rick (Humphrey Bogard), beautiful nostalgic music played by the singer/pianist Sam. "Play it again Sam". That was what Ilsa, with her beautiful eyes, said to Sam as a request to play "As Tears Go By". And so this film really did contain more beautiful scenes, such as that scene where Louis Renault threw the wine with the Vichy brand in the trash. Well, for those who don't know yet, Vichy at the time stood for the French government that collaborated with Nazi Germany. Hence Louis' action.

Edit: It should be clear that I completely distance myself from my previous posts about Casablanca. They can go straight into the trash can.

The WWII Casablanca where the film is set is a town for refugees from all over Europe, where everyone kills the time sitting in a cafe, gambling, dealing on the black market while waiting for a visa for America. An egotistical bar owner, Rick, alternates between his feelings for a love disillusionment that has resurfaced, and his nature as a former resistance figure to help the weak. He's got two visas, but will he give them to the person who hurt him the most? Will his selfishness make it or his idealism? Difficult dilemmas make for excellent films and Casablanca proves it. It is beautifully written with strong characters, fun twists and a powerful ending. All time classic, and rightly so!
