Quite disappointing indeed. The film lives up to its notorious reputation during some scenes, but is otherwise very mediocre.

The first half hour is completely devoid of dialogue, and as soon as that guy opens his mouth for the first time it becomes immediately clear why. The acting + delivery of the dialogues is too pathetic for words, which sometimes even causes the film to reach laughable proportions.

However, the acting is not the only thing that has a hint of amateurism. The use of color is incredibly dull, it also seemed as if some fugly pale filter was continuously hanging over the film. Looked extremely cheap. The weighty soundtrack also failed to escape this problem.

A few very unchristian scenes remain. They were certainly gross, but not shocking at all. Yet they are about the only scenes that are not completely uninteresting, although the final slaughter was so long that the impact was hard to find.

Could have lived much more. Apart from the gore, it is cinematic poverty of the lowest order. Small 1.5* for the gore then.

The poster for this film is beautiful, unfortunately the film only manages to be this beautiful at times.

Nature shots alternate with gruesome images accompanied by a good choice of music, something that is typical of Marian Dora's style. Unfortunately, there are many points that detract from this film.

The awkward delivery of his lines, including Carsten Frank's soft, almost comical voice, took away from the character he played for me, it simply did not fit the role he played.

The build-up is quite slow and does not manage to remain interesting enough. The lack of conversations didn't help.

The second half of the film has some strong scenes, which mainly score the points.

2.0*

The infamous and mysterious director Marian Dora, also known as the permanent assistant director of the late Ulli Lommel, delivers a rather dirty and strange film with Cannibal. However, the underlying concept is beautiful and particularly interesting as it is based on the murder of Armin Meiwes, aka the Cannibal of Rotenburg. It's special how this really was someone's fantasy, but it doesn't seem to me to be what Dora herself found interesting. The focus on long drawn out sex scenes (with horse sounds edited in for some reason) and filth almost completely takes over the film. The screen is provided by two ridiculously acting gentlemen who are also let down by Dora's script. The dialogue they have to ram through makes absolutely no sense, so the film never feels like a real story. The controversial finale goes a long way in terms of gore and is depicted in impressive detail, but after just 5 minutes it becomes a series of messy zoom-ins on limbs and viscera. I was hoping to understand the love story of these two gentlemen somewhat better, but ultimately I'm even further removed from the material now.
