As one of Wall Street's biggest businessmen, he has just staked his entire fortune on the decline of the Chinese yuan. A wrong decision turns out: as the minutes tick by, his empire slowly collapses. Don DeLillo's 2003 book was predictive. Based on a day in the life of a young yup, we see it descend in style and we see the crisis pass us by in contrasts.

1. Contradictions:

* cosmos [space] versus polis [city]

* the white super de luxe limos versus the dingy city

* the information yuppies versus the occupy movement and the cake throwers

The cosmos needs money, sex and screens; the police protest.

2. The descent:

Packert himself descends, in several ways:

* in clothes: first no tie, then no jacket,

* from breakfast, via lunch to take away dinner of aubergines

* back to his childhood: barbershop, his dad

and only after the limo has been parked for 'a while'.

In the film, the [too many] texts become less and less abstract. Towards the end, he wants to know the meaning of everything he does and what happens. In vain, by the way, the answer does not come.

Lots of talk but very little action in this unimpressive film adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel of the same name about an emotionless multi-billionaire [Robert Pattinson] who, during a limousine ride to his hairdresser, has several encounters consisting mainly of sex and pseudo-philosophical conversations. The cinematography of Peter Suschitzky is a plus, but Cronenberg never manages to get the viewer involved in the main character or the events. Only Binoche and Paul Giamatti bring some life to the brewery. Furthermore, this is difficult to get through.

Remarkable event.

Die Cronenberg has become a special director. In the later films, his directing career took a different direction from horror with a strong foundation in effects. Cosmopolis seems to feel like a movie that should show its intelligence, but in the end I thought it was mostly a pretty silly movie that doesn't really get anywhere.

There are, however, some neat audiovisual choices, especially when it comes to interior and choice of location. The film does feel modern despite the old-fashioned content quality. This is especially noticeable in terms of dialogue and attitude. The characters mostly act like they're stuck in the 80's with quite a striking bleating tone that lasts throughout the film.

Furthermore, the film regularly makes strange choices, which are mainly reinforced by the rather idiotic and disturbing character of Pattinson. In the meantime, he makes better choices for film roles, because this was really a miss. He doesn't fit in at all, but the other cast members don't do much either. Many roles get in the way of the film, the only one I thought stood out was Giamatti.

Sometimes nice visually, but otherwise a film that mainly makes a remarkable and annoying impression. After the movie ended, I scratched my head for a while about what the intention was. Assume that an enthusiast will probably see it better than me, but I can't do much with this. Let's hope that Cronenberg, if he makes another film, will just stick to horror films.
