Bella Martha plot

Martha is a chef at a restaurant in Hamburg. She lives for cooking; she hardly has a private life. She takes criticism of her accomplished culinary delights as a personal insult. When Martha's sister dies in a car accident, she takes her sister's eight-year-old daughter Lina into her home.

Bella Martha is a film that I did not disappoint, that I saw on TV and that I still remember. The film is set around the kitchen of a restaurant, but offers more than that, and does not get bogged down in the cooking theme as other films do, such as Les Saveurs du Palais (2012).

The film looks airy and fresh, and looks great. Definitely not a movie to avoid.

The film won the Audience Award in Germany, among other things. And of course a Hollywood remake was inevitable: No Reservations (2007)

Pleasant and sympathetic film, with, in addition to a somewhat tearful passage towards the end, many great moments and with equally charming music.

The ending is quite original and contains the synthesis of the film : In addition to a passionate professional life, there is still a lot .... but what you ultimately live for the most will always float to the surface ....

The budding romance between Martha and Mario may be a bit contrived, but otherwise I quite enjoyed this film. A film that pays attention to food in the margins. Always special films, those food films, which often make you feel like eating delicious things. However, this is not a pure food film, but the side jumps are pleasant.

The focus is on the care of a child and the difficult straddling that Aunt Martha experiences with these sudden events in her tight career-oriented life as a top chef. I found a number of subplots rather pointless (such as the conversations with the psychologist, the neighbor, or the visit at the end). And I would also have liked to see the relationship between Martha and Lina worked out better and more deeply.

Not an absolute winner, but definitely worth a visit. Gedeck is doing fine by the way. Strange to see Ulrich Thomsen, not such an unknown actor, play such an insignificant role.
