Beautifully filmed in a tragic setting.

Beirut as the theater of the all-destroying civil war, the beginning and end of which are hard to understand for an outsider and everyone has something against everyone. Which is nicely explained in the scene in which the taxi makes its way to the hotel. And in retrospect, much later, it is not very clear whether anyone has actually benefited from the whole misery - but countless people have died, fled, and an ancient historic city is gone. And have we learned anything from that? no, because a little bit further on, the same thing just happens again. In that respect, the film is exactly up to date.

And what also succeeds quite well is in conveying how complicated the matter is, and how everyone tries to come out of it pleasantly for themselves. Not necessarily in a neat or honest way, naturally. Not a very nice image of humanity, but very beautifully filmed.

Strong thriller. The story is well put together and expertly developed by Anderson. The tension soon follows and towards the end it is increasingly increased. As a viewer you have to keep your wits about you, but it doesn't get very complex. Hamm is comfortable in his role and shows that he is a great actor. Visually, the film looks good with a beautiful eighties setting. Fine thriller. 4.0

Pretty okay.

Brad Anderson makes a great film in itself in a genre that rarely appeals to me. Political thrillers, made by Americans, about a conflict in the Middle East: they rarely, if ever, make for the best cinema. However, Anderson succeeds in making an atmospheric and tight film. He cleverly uses Beirut as an atmospheric yet chaotic setting. With Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike, he has two protagonists who do their job very well. Only that ending is just a bit too American for me, including the waving flag, and ensures that my score is not slightly higher.
