Babel plot

"If You Want to be Understood... Listen."

Two young teenagers in Morocco set out armed with their father's shotgun to escort their herd of goats. Along the way, they decide to test this rifle and this has disastrous consequences. The lives of four groups of people are directly related to the incident. We see the story of an American tourist couple, a Mexican nanny who smuggles two children across the American border, and a Japanese deaf teenager and her father. Their lack of communication skills with those around them means that, despite an incident that connects them all, they remain completely isolated.

Somehow I had the feeling that this movie was going to be very disappointing. But that didn't work out, it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship with beautiful acting, beautiful actors, excellent images of beautiful locations. However, the story is a bit too smooth and too moralizing, too stereotypical and too focused on pleasing the audience with an 'intelligent' story. Too pretentious, too focused on winning.

On the other hand, the makers are also entitled to some pretensions, because they show a very nice film here. What I certainly also think is very well done is that the actors are shown to a considerable extent natural - Brad Pitt with capelin eyes and Cate Blanchett with very light down on her cheeks, for example. They just look like real people that way.

The plot does have some rattles, the people behave just a bit too much like a headless chicken (sic!) and that the consequences are there for the taking shouldn't really come as a surprise. But on the whole, the idea of small causes, big effects comes off pretty well. And the way it's told is certainly exciting enough.

“Oh my God. She's leg shot.”

Iñárritu knows how to make atmospheric, penetrating and inventive films. His films are long, but Babel also has a certain flow that makes it seem much shorter. Babel shows the impact one action (in this case a gunshot) can have on different people on different continents.

Sometimes the connection to the gun is dragged in by the hair, but Babel is also more about the characters and how they all deal with the consequences of their own actions. The feeling of rejection, not belonging, fatal decisions, the death of a child or mother, etc. Babel is not a happy fare. But Iñárritu is a master at developing his characters and a great storyteller. Of the four stories, that of the deaf Japanese girl is clearly the most interesting and that last part really cuts through your soul. Nice final shot also on that balcony. From a story point of view, Babel comes across as somewhat contrived, but with the characters Iñárritu really gets to the heart of what makes film beautiful.
