Nice film set during the depression and the story of which is very similar to Bonny and Clyde. A rather disjointed start, and not always interesting. And although this is a film by Martin Scorsese, it is certainly not really recognizable as a film by the master (except for the violent ending). Barbara Hersey does a good job in the title role. A narrow 3.0 stars.

Scorsese's raw rebellious roots, said a fairly recent illuminating newspaper article about this film, which was much more groundbreaking than one would think.

'Boxcar Bertha': The raw, rebellious roots by Martin Scorsese - DeWereldMorgen.beDeWereldMorgen.be

The wanderings of a group of robbers during the Great Depression; this includes, of course, Bertha, who finds the bandit life a fun game, but also her friend Bill Shelby, who turns from a trade union protester into a kind of Robin Hood. They are also accompanied by a villain in nice clothes, and a black man who flees from prison with them.

Scorsese was still working on his test piece here and of course you notice that; it doesn't exactly feel like a robust whole. Furthermore, you cannot escape the comparison with Bonnie & Clyde. The harsh ending was expected and is seasoned with symbolism. Apart from the cinematographic value attributed to Boxcar Bertha in the article, I personally experienced it as a fairly mediocre film.

Clumsy and old-fashioned film with a misleading poster, which promises much more spectacle than you ultimately see. Director Martin Scorsese certainly works rather hastily in the build-up, especially the romance between David Carradine and Barbara Hershey develops far too quickly. After they meet, sex starts within 5 minutes, so the makers clearly didn't have much patience. The film then hastily introduces some other gang members and a rather hackneyed crime scene emerges that is equally unconvincing (partly due to a lack of variety and adventure). Only in the second half does the violence increase and that results in captivating moments, but Scorsese would have done better to experiment more in terms of content and visuals. I Call First certainly showed a fresh filmmaker who did his best to deliver distinctive work, but Boxcar Bertha, on the other hand, is tough cinema with only few moments that really stand out. An extra half for the fairly gloomy ending, otherwise I would have felt completely cheated.
