70s. The naive and uneducated Eddie Adams is discovered by porn director Jack Horner. Jack and his girlfriend Amber take Eddie under their wing. Under their creative leadership, Eddie quickly develops into (literally) the greatest in his field. Eddie becomes porn star Dirk Diggler and enjoys his fame to the fullest. But then he also learns the dark side of success.

A finger exercise for Magnolia, in which PTA can go wild. That works great for the first hour, then the film collapses a bit. A story needs to be completed where I think PTA zooms in on the wrong events, and the first hour was so full of energy that you as a viewer are already exhausted. It's not bad, but a lot less.
But until then enjoy. Wonderful camera work with sometimes beautiful shots (the roller skates in front of the picture and Wahlberg a little further on), a delightful soundtrack and full of beautiful characters. They are all out of place, they are actually losers, but written with such compassion and strongly acted that everyone gets sympathy. 4.0* (remains).

That's a nice reunion.
I could appreciate this one at the time, I thought, but it had faded quite far from my memory. Turns out to be simply one of PTA's best works, in an already not nauseating oeuvre.
Razor-sharp sketches of American characters in an American setting, grotesque, disconcerting and full of empathy, sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-moving, and sometimes both at the same time, and always without judgment: it's what Anderson does.
And in Boogie Nights it all goes really well, not least thanks to the once again great cast. In addition to the well-known class of Reilly, Moore, Hoffman and Macy, among others, we also see here at first sight what atypical actors such as Wahlberg and Reynolds rise to great heights for 'this kind of' films.
Beautiful time frame too, of course, and you empathize with the characters, who have something disarming in their naivety, their struggle when their dreams fall apart, and their eventual flight back into the warm bath of their illusory world.

Nice Anderson again.
27 and being able to do this is quite special, and it is clear that he wanted something different than the "more normal" films. How fresh he was here, I can't really say that about his latest Phantom Thread , which again lacks this real freshness a bit.
Perhaps the best thing about the film was the brilliant use of the camera. The movements, fast zoom-ins, rotations and speed of the camera provide a certain freshness and smoothness. You get through the 155 minutes pretty quickly, that's why I think these kinds of rise and fall films are a bit better than, for example, Scorsese.
This is not better than the 2 years later Magnolia , but it looks like it. The only difference between the 2 is that with Magnolia I was immediately sucked into the film and never let go, this was not always the case here. Sometimes it just let me go, and therefore the absolute full attention was no longer with it.
Acting is fine, Wahlberg does quite well in his somewhat daring role, but Reynolds was also quite nice as Jack Horner. I didn't think Moore was too good, but that's not really my actress either. The roles of Hoffman, Macy, Reilly and Graham were fun.
Smooth film, which, despite its long running time, never gets boring and goes by very quickly. I hope Anderson has more films like this in store. I can hear it, I'm going to see more of this man.
