The screenwriter Adam meets his mysterious neighbor Harry in his almost empty tower block in London. As their bond grows closer, Adam returns to his childhood home. There he bumps into his deceased parents, who look exactly the same as they did thirty years ago.

A beautiful moving film about love and loss.
The film starts slowly, with a portrait of Adam, a lonely writer living in a modern apartment building. He is working on a story about his parents, but it is not yet smooth. He meets his drunken neighbor Harry, the only resident of the new complex besides him. A romance soon develops between the two lonely souls.
In the meantime, Adam often visits his parental home, where he re-establishes contact with his parents. He talks about his homosexuality and the parents each deal with it in their own way.
The film is about grief and the things we would like to say to loved ones when they are suddenly gone. The parents appear to have been deceased for a long time and Adam has conversations with them in his fantasy about how his life is going.
Although I thought the parents were suspiciously young, I thought for a moment that it might be possible. A teenage pregnancy perhaps. But when the father responded very well to his coming out and tears were shed for each other's forgiveness, I began to realize that this is the response Adam needed. This is the life that Adam would have liked to have, but never had due to their untimely death. What follows is a tragic ghost story in which Adam seeks his parents' approval and they ultimately bond. The scene in the American restaurant is heartbreaking.
The death of Harry that follows and also his ghostly appearance felt like a bit too much for me. It is certainly a sad moment, but after the previous scene it resonated less with me. The closing images with the starry sky are beautiful.
A powerful story about loving and letting go, which really took me some time to recover.

Adam [Andrew Scott] is one of two residents of a huge apartment complex. The other is Harry [Paul Mescal], with whom he starts a relationship after meeting. Adam regularly visits his father [Jamie Bell] and mother [Claire Foy] who died as a result of a traffic accident when Adam was 12 years old. The basic premise of Taichia Yamada's book works better on paper than on film, and Haigh really tests your patience in the confusing first hour. The excellent cast, with Scott as the standout, keeps the attention until the beautiful denouement. And what a wonderful soundtrack!

Excellent film, although I must admit that Mrs. Vlaschjan had to explain afterwards what exactly happened. That wasn't easy, because she was very emotional. It's that she doesn't do stars, otherwise there would probably have been five.
Personally, during the film I was too preoccupied with wondering what it was like to really be moved. Maybe I'm not really the type for that. But I thought it was a nice, smart film. Strangely enough, the scenes in which Adan explains to his parents what things are like these days were especially impressive. Progress in the LGBTI+ field is painfully slow, but something has changed in recent decades; That does sound hopeful.
I haven't read the novel. Had never heard of it either. I'm curious about it now, although it's a shame that I already know the plot. You can't have everything.

Een geweldige film en uitstekende acteurs. Als kijker is het blijven werken maar de beloning is er met deze film.
