The audience winner of the IFFR. Good film, it starts very exciting, then collapses a little bit every now and then (or it's because it was my 5th film of the day, that's also possible), but remains a very good film overall.

Former Brazilian congressman Rubens Paiva [Selton Mello] lives in Rio de Janeiro in 1970, under the impression that the authoritarian regime responsible for his ouster will leave him alone as long as he keeps a low profile. But in 1970 he is arrested anyway, and later also his wife Eunice [Fernanda Torres] and eldest daughter Veroca [Valentina Herszage]. Eunice and Veroca are released, but are not given any clarity about what happened to Rubens. However, they are watched 24 hours a day by plainclothes officers from the time of their release. The screenplay is not so much about politics in Brazil, but about a mother of five children living in uncertainty about the fate of a father and husband. Torres received most praise for her performance, but it is thanks to Salles, casting director Leticia Naveira and the young actors who play Rubens Paiva's children that the ensemble acting is so authentic. At the end we see photos of the real Paiva family.

Saw it two weeks ago in Enschede in a room full of Portuguese speaking people, fun to experience.

This is a film that really just keeps getting better and better and it was the part that normally doesn't do much for me, at the end with a huge time jump, that really moved me. Maybe because Salles had already been chiseling away for the hour and a half before. Patient but precise and then hitting home hard with another little tap. Although Torres's great acting also helps with that. Natural, modest but so incredibly endearing and empathetic. She was really the heart of the film and 100% human. A rare beautiful performance.

The film starts off strong with a light atmosphere (the 70s and later the 90s are depicted very strongly anyway) that in the tunnelchanges very quickly. That you as a viewer know: it's all well and good and you can have a good life in that dictatorship but suddenly not. Perhaps the weakest part comes around those interrogations, something we've seen before. Fortunately, the film then takes a different turn. No longer the claustrophobic thriller but a family drama about those left behind that strikes exactly the right tone and manages to portray very well what such a disappearancedoes to them. It also helps that in the beginning just enough time is taken for the family to get to know them.

But the last three quarters are downright great. When it comes to looking back, justice and where there is a hint of melancholy. The country has moved on in those years, those who stay behind always get stuck in the 70s until that puzzle piece can finally be solved. I was really moved by this and that doesn't happen often. 4.5*.
