I don't know much about Japanese films, but I had the impression that the acting was terribly bad. The sound and what I saw didn't convince me at all. The story was interesting and the film was also nice and mysterious, also visually reasonable, but it still didn't grab me.

It starts off like a classic thriller, with a love triangle leading to the murder of the husband. However, Seki is not a femme fatale, but a submissive woman who is torn between duty and passion. Some scenes are quite explicit, although that is not too bad by today's standards. A nice image is when they dump the corpse into a well, shown from the depths. The big turning point is when the husband returns as a ghost. He is completely white, still drinks sake and still pulls his rickshaw. A dramatic highlight is when a hysterical Seki sets her house on fire.

At the end of the nineteenth century, ordinary Japanese still lived as tenants of a piece of land. The fields and surrounding forest were owned by a master. The seasons alternate, with chirping of crickets, buzzing of mosquitoes, wet autumn leaves and a snowstorm. Toru Takemitsu's music adds to the eerie atmosphere with a combination of traditional Japanese influence and modern, shrill dissonances.

A nice Japanese film where adultery leads to murder. Quite a classic story, but with its own twist. Not that that ghost had much added value, on the contrary. And it's not scary either. The function was limited, except perhaps for the fact that the conscience of the perpetrators was provoked.

The couple shows very strange behavior at times when the film takes a time jump of several years. Suddenly the control was completely gone and their abnormal behavior also became strange to those around them. Excellent setting of a village from the late 19th century, surrounded by forests.

The acting was a bit theatrical, but I had no problems with it. The murder investigation by the police was also a bit clumsy, but I quite enjoyed the film.
