Emotional drama about damaged people who make a half-hearted attempt to get their lives back on track. All things considered, a continuous pool of dull misery. The acting is certainly well done, but the story could leave you with a depression.

Morgan Freeman is still alive and kicking in this mostly compelling drama about a young woman (Florence Pugh) whose life changes dramatically when she is involved in a fatal accident. Pugh is excellent and characters and script are thoughtfully fleshed out, at least right up to the end, when a forced and utterly implausible scene at a party nearly derails the film. Fortunately, the beautiful ending can just save the film.

A Good Person is an insanely well-acted drama with a wonderful Pugh and Freeman in the lead roles. But O'Connor (Ryan in the film) in the supporting role also plays her role with verve and can be added to the list of promising young actors.
Don't be fooled by the poster and the synopsis, because this is definitely not a feel good movie and that unlikely friendship is kind of there, but it goes with very deep valleys. It is a genuine drama about dealing with a horrific event and its aftermath with addiction, broken relationships and the rehabilitation process.
The film does take a risk because of this and sometimes that balance of misery is just lost, so that you sometimes yearn for a light moment in which things are better. But on the other hand, it does sign the film that it avoids the well-trodden paths and that this will not be the umpteenth film in which Morgan Freeman makes a friendship for life and is a sweet old man.
Too bad this guts isn't rewarded at the end, because it's pretty obvious they're going to get back together from the stuff you hear in the background (Nathan's single again). That had more to it allow for one's own interpretation.
