The third Kiarostami that I saw and I also liked this one, although in total it is slightly less good than the other two.

I have not yet seen a film of the ''Koker trilogy'', to which this Through the Olive Trees also belongs. While watching I didn't feel like I was missing a certain prior knowledge, because everything was pretty easy to follow. The screenplay reminded me somewhat of Truffauts La Nuit Américaine (1973), which is also about a director who has problems making his movie. Through the Olive Trees is a fun film, and certainly not just drama, as the genre here suggests, because there is enough lightness and comic elements in it.

In addition to making a film, the common thread is also the story of the boy, who is crazy about a girl, while she doesn't like him. On the film set he tries again and again to get her attention, which regularly creates a comical note. The scenes, which have to be redone again and again because something is not going well, are also very entertaining in design. The camera work is beautiful and knows how to capture the beauty of nature there in a beautiful way. The last few minutes in particular are beautifully filmed.

The deeper layers, I couldn't get out this time. I thought it was a very entertaining film, with some nice scenes, but it just lacks something this time, to really speak of a very good film.

3.5*

Reasonable film again from Kiarostami, a film that is continuously maintained but never makes a deep impression. Zire Darakhatan Zeyton doesn't strike me as academic or even intelligent; in fact, there is a rather simple plot about a boy in love with a girl, cast in a narrative form in which the filmmaking itself is made part of the story. The visual tone of Kiarostami is recognizable, especially due to the soft colors and the shots from the car, but here too the director seems to me to be a bit overdone. I will keep watching Kiarostami's films when I come across them, but after four films (plus a documentary) I don't exactly have the inclination to look hard.

A romantic drama packaged as a film within a film, in which fiction and reality are seamlessly intertwined. I didn't find everything very interesting, but the elongated poetic final scene is without a doubt peerless.
