Poland, 1983. Despite the suspension, martial law, declared by the communist authorities to quell solidarity opposition, is still in force in the country. On May 12, Grzegorz Przemyk, son of the opposition poet Barbara Sadowska, is arrested and severely beaten by a police patrol. Przemyk dies after two days of suffering. The only witness to the fatal beating is one of Grzegorz's colleagues, Jurek Popiel, who decides to fight for justice and testify against the police.

Warsaw 1983. Students Jurek [Tomasz Zietik] and Grzegorz [Mateusz Górski] are celebrating the successful completion of Grzegorz's final exams in the street when they are approached by some police officers. It soon turns into a confrontation in which both boys are seriously abused and Grzegorz even dies as a result of a stomach haemorrhage. However, Grzegorz's father [Leopold Przemyk] is a prominent poet. As a result, Grzegorz's funeral is attended by large numbers and the Polish authorities are forced to provide accountability. Obviously not by telling the truth, but by watering down the events and appointing a scapegoat. They also have to silence eyewitness Jurek and any form of intimidation is allowed to achieve this. An authentic reconstruction of Poland in the aftermath of Communism led by Jaruzelski [here played by Tomasz Dedek] with a strong cast. There are few surprises for those who are somewhat familiar with the history of the former Eastern Bloc countries, but Matuszynski does succeed in making connections with the present.
