Nice film about a Jewish woman who dresses up as a man in order to study. The film is set in the early 20th century in Eastern Europe and looks nice. Barbra Streisand is not really credible in her role as a man. As a debuting director, she comes across much better here. Sometimes a bit monotonous (especially because Barbra Streisand is the only one who sings). A nice ending though.

What a beautiful, captivating film. I got completely into it. I really like the songs, beautifully sung, and the story captivated me from beginning to end. Nice atmosphere and very well played. I have to say that I would not quickly see Yentl/Anshel as a man, but that did not bother me. It is the idea that counts. I am positively surprised! A 9. 4.5*

An all too familiar title from my youth, like so many from that time when there wasn't much to choose from and you were condemned to whatever was on channels 1 and 2. And yes, then it happened that you and the whole family, I was probably about 8 or 9 years old, watched Yentl. And of course this wasn't for me at that age, but I still can't help but take such a title to the thrift store and see how it goes down now. But unfortunately the years and age haven't changed that.

The story is clearly about Yentl who disguises himself as a man and focuses on Bible study and other studies, something that was absolutely not done at that time given the difference between men and women within Jewish customs. In itself not a very uninteresting starting point for a story or film, besides the time frame is quite okay, and we have the customs and habits within the Jewish religious culture. But unfortunately it quickly goes wrong in an atmosphere that can best be described as 'happy happy happy happy', it is too cheerful and cheerful, it is to say the least saccharine and sickly sweet and then there are the singing episodes which give the film a high Fiddler on the roof content.

And yes, those are quite a few ingredients that simply do not suit me, it will undoubtedly not be bad although I find it difficult to 'turn off' my personal taste on this, but someone who can appreciate the singing qualities of Barbra Streisand, loves her music and such film genres will undoubtedly find this great. In short, I have nothing to do with it, although I do want to address a remarkable point of the film and that is the special switch from being in love with Avigdor to then marrying his sweetheart Hadass as a good deed or something. All strange, but it will not bother me either. Anyway, done and on to the next film.
