Aboriginal people, in the heart of Australia, resist the advance of an American mining company because its burrowing in the earth disturbs the sleep of the green ants. Lance Hackett (Bruce Spence), a mining engineer, is appointed as mediator in the conflict, and through contact with the original inhabitants, he is increasingly questioned about the blessings of Western technology.
