Edit your four films in a row (remove the minutes-long subtitles), release it abroad, and it works wonders.

Voyna i Mir is one of those Russian film classics that everyone knows by name, thanks to the Oscar and of course Tolstoy's book, which was voted no. 3 of a best book of all time by some national poll not too long ago competition.

Fortunately, this almost 7 hour quest did not turn out to be a disappointment. This acclaimed version is big on everything. The thousands of extras, the costumes, the salons, ballrooms, church interiors, battles, burning buildings, and camera positions from heaven. The craziness of war thus enters the picture, along with ideas about it by the story's protégés; ideas that are reinforced as dreams and orchestration of images.

Over the top here and there, fragmentary and sometimes impossible to follow, but also an inimitable piece of cinema that will never ever be made this way again [cgi era].

I'll start the book, just like seeing this cinema history piece, it's about time. Thick 4*.

For me, this film, of which I have watched a part every week, mainly has to do with the battles and the great fire in Moscow. All very clever and I can assume that without special effects. I think this film must have cost a fortune for Russian standards. On a visual level, this film is perfectly fine and apart from the rather boring second part, this film also managed to fascinate me enough. I had to, otherwise I don't think I would have had the patience to watch this 400-minute film in its entirety. That's why I think the average of 3.80* for this film is also somewhat flattering, assuming that film viewers who call it quits prematurely drop their votes.

Overall, I give it a 3.5*... Visually, the film is absolutely beautiful and Bondarchuk, who was actually an actor by profession, pulled out all the stops to make Russia's greatest literary work as prestigious as possible. Whether it's the lavish ballrooms, the large-scale battles or the wild nature, the images more than once linger like mirages. Where things are sometimes less good are the time jumps that the film makes unannounced and the abundance of characters who are not always given a full role in the story. That, and the rather literary voice-over and dialogue, didn't always make it easy to follow. An hour could be cut from the long-winded second part. But as a film adaptation I think this is more successful than the American film from the 1950s (3*). I found the Russian identity and the vigorous national consciousness that typified tsarist Russia indispensable.
