The Misfits plot

"It shouts and sings with life ... explodes with love!"

The young, attractive but naive Roslyn Tabor is disillusioned, divorced and from the big city. In Nevada, she befriends three "maladjusted" men: the elderly cowboy Gay Langland, the mechanic and sad widower Guido, and the decrepit rodeo rider Perce Howland. The trio's pick-of-the-day lifestyle allows Roslyn to experience freedom, exuberance and passion for the first time. But when her innocent idealism collides with harsh reality, Roslyn must risk losing their friendship... and the one true love she's ever known.

In the beginning, puzzle pieces slide across the screen that don't fit anywhere. The term misfits is used for the mustangs, which are too big and too wild for this time and therefore only serve as dog food or for the rodeo. However, the same term applies to the four main characters: misfits who no longer fit into the modern economic system. Through the dialogues it becomes clear which problems from their past have influenced this: an absent father, broken relationships, deaths... The men throw themselves into alcohol and reckless behaviour. Roslyn is a contrast to these machos: she is hypersensitive, does not even want a bunny to be killed.

The well-constructed screenplay is by Arthur Miller. There are similarities with reality, most notably his divorce from Marilyn Monroe. Like her character, she sometimes had trouble remembering her lines. Director John Huston also looked too deeply into the glass. There is a general atmosphere of decay, of no longer fitting in with the zeitgeist. There are a few mistakes in it: Clark Gable addresses Thelma Ritter once by her real first name. They look at the stars when it is overcast.

Highlights are the spectacular hunt for the mustangs, in which sixty-year-old Gable allowed himself to be dragged forty meters by a stallion. Also nice is the scene where Marilyn Monroe plays paddle ball. Of all her roles, this is the one with the most depth, a role for which she took inspiration from her personal struggles. The result is gloomy but haunting.

A movie you tend to underestimate. When I first saw him a few years ago, I was somewhat disappointed. The fame and the stories surrounding it were already determining the image at the time, but the trick is not to include that in your opinion formation. And lo and behold, when I recently gave The Misfits a rematch, this just turns out to be a strong film. A character study, full of symbolism and beautiful play. Apparently nothing much happens, but it is brewing beneath the surface and that comes out as nuanced as it is powerful during the final chord. I've never seen Monroe as good as in this picture. The role is therefore made for her, and in her way she really makes it something memorable. Gable and Clift are good here, but nothing special. Both have done a better job at times, but they do their job properly. Wallach is pretty good and Ritter in a supporting role does what she always does: excel. One you must have seen.

A strange affair. Beautiful images in the Nevada desert in black and white. But I didn't quite like Arthur Miller's story. Apparently this was a gift from him to Marilyn Monroe. The twists and turns of the men around Marilyn seemed unbelievable after a while. Or it could also be that it started to bore me. In one way or another I also failed to see the film as a vehicle of some legendary actors on the go who for once do something different than we are used to.

Clark Gable, still with his typical look, this time as a drunk, I don't know… It's a shame that he performed his stunts himself and very unfortunate that this probably led to his death. The last scene in the film is given to Gable and Monroe. Two stars looking for the highway that is under the star in the sky. That too can be labeled as prophetic.

The role of Montgomery Clift was remarkably small unfortunately. The most I enjoyed the performance of Eli Wallach. I didn't think Monroe was bad but also not special, although I can imagine that this role was a new step for her.

Good to see once.
