The Long, Hot Summer plot

"The people of Faulkner...the language of Faulkner...the world of Faulkner!"

Will has a son and a daughter. He doesn't get very high with either one. Jody is a weakling and Clara fails to hook a man. I remember the mid-'60s TV series of the same name starring Roy Thinnes as Ben Quick and Woodward look-a-like Nancy Malone as Clara Varner. But I had never seen this movie before. I was actually expecting something like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, also from 1958.

There are some similarities between that brooding story by Tennessee Williams and this film adaptation of a few short stories by William Faulkner, but in terms of content, execution and acting, this film is a lot less than Cat on ... .

The most interesting is actually the interaction between Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, who married shortly after the completion of the film (January 1958). Also striking is the literally and figuratively swollen role of Orson Welles, which is a lot less subtle than the comparable role of Burl Ives in Cat ....

In summary, an interesting film that is certainly worth watching, but which pales in comparison if you have already seen its competitor (also with Newman) from the same year.

Reasonable film in which a man enters a town and starts working for the most powerful man there. Although the characters are well portrayed, the story and their mutual relationships are not always captivating. Mainly because it all lacks some impact. The cast does not disappoint.

Acting duel between Orson Welles and Paul Newman in melodrama based on the work of William Faulkner. Newman plays Ben Quick, the archetypal newcomer to the household of landowner Will Varner [Welles], whose arrival especially shakes up the lives of Will's daughter [Joanna Woodward] and son Jody [Anthony Franciosa]. Passion, jealousy and all the questionable acts that go with it are reviewed in a well-acted, but not particularly intriguing soap opera that seems to be working towards a spectacular finale, but that is also a bit disappointing.
