Wonderfully beautiful, underrated indie gem. A cold, grim work that leans more towards the New French Extremity wave than you might think at first glance. It's not so much about what you see, but about what is (or isn't) at stake for the victim and a legitimate thought behind the actions, by not assigning any value to a human life. The sincere urgency to kill or not to be killed, a difficult 'sweet spot' to find. The film ingeniously switches between these, by, among other things, giving two completely different victims their own faces.

The calm, symmetrical shots, low-fi electronic soundtrack and high-contrast black-and-white cinematography are certainly not means to romanticize the genre, as A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) did so dreamily. Here it is in the service of the dehumanizing and ruthless acts of the apathetic protagonist. Magalhães plays one of the most intriguing, layered psychopaths the genre has known in recent years, even with those expressive Bambi eyes to compensate. Masterpiece.

A particularly pleasant debut by Nicolas Pesce. In the meantime, two other films of his have been released (Piercing (2018) and The Grudge (2020)) that have absolutely aroused my curiosity after seeing this wonderful debut. Both films are high on my film wish list.

The Eyes of My Mother creates an exciting picture of a lonely, unstable woman in just 76 minutes. The film focuses very pleasantly on this character and largely leaves potential side plots and intriguing supporting characters for what they are. They are passers-by who loom on the edge of her world of experience. They are in the service of the main story. The film follows one line and that is the line of main character Francisca.

The entourage, the atmosphere and the photography are fantastic. Completely shot in hypnotic black and white, a sad and ominous ambiance is created that in all its sad oppression is further supported by disturbing musical sounds and the sound of a droning bass. The film says it with a visual atmosphere and there is therefore not much dialogue. There are hardly any explanations.

It is a brutal film. Not by throwing violence very graphically and bloodily, but precisely by presenting the brutal violence suggestively within that atmosphere of oppressive threat. The invisible violence nestles in your head and leaves a permanent bad taste there.

As a viewer you are mentally fattened. Eventually you are so full of uncomfortable impressions that it starts to feel particularly unpleasant.

No light fare. Pesce doesn't throw around any relativization or other forms of comic relief. Grit your teeth and keep going.

Welcome to hell.

Way too low a score here, this is a horror film that has everything. Beautifully shot in black and white, great acting, gore, shocking, a gem of a film! From the moment that pastor enters the house

enters there is an underlying tension that really wouldn't let go of me.. which probably started with that cow. This is the reason why horror is still one of my favorite genres!
