The Cider House Rules plot

"A story about how far we must travel to find the place where we belong."

Homer has lived all his life in Dr. Larch because he was never adopted. Larch sees Homer somewhat as his own son and has trained him as his successor. When young lovers Wally and Candy visit the orphanage, Dr. Larch performs an abortion, despite the fact that it is illegal. Homer decides, much to Dr. Larch, not to continue working in the orphanage all his life, but to go out into the wide world. He leaves with Candy and Wally for Wally's family, where he starts work as an apple picker.

I wouldn't immediately call Lasse Hallström my favorite director, but there is a certain reassurance when I see that he has taken over the directing. The man usually makes pleasant films. In addition, The Cider House Rules boasts a decent cast and I too had heard positive stories about it.

I recognize myself in what Fisico writes above. It was a pleasant surprise that the film wasn't overly sentimental, because I was a little worried about that. It's actually a pretty quiet drama. A little too quiet sometimes, because from the moment Homer takes the job as an apple picker, the viewer is presented with a series of sub-plots that are not very interesting. The situation with Rose, the blossoming love between Homer and Candy, the weakening Dr. Larch... It all makes little impact. Despite this, the film does not want to become very boring. Tobey Maguire may be a bit wooden, but that fits this role well. He is also well assisted by Charlize Theron, Delroy Lindo, Paul Rudd and Michael Caine. In hindsight, the ending is how I wanted it to be. The film left me with a feeling of satiety.

In fact, The Cider House Rules does not bring anything new under the sun and therefore in my opinion it is not a film that you absolutely must see. On the other hand, there is a calm and therefore pleasant feature film. Hallström knows how to neatly portray the story, as I am used to from him by now.

3*

Film that passed me by for 20 years, and now I've seen it because of the considerable reactions and many Oscar nominations, no less than seven of which two were silver-plated. But what is so special about this film has not become clear to me.

The beginning is still nice in the orphanage, a separate world with a special patron, and an orphan that cannot be rid of for various reasons. In the initial phase it reminds a bit of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, an outsider limited by the environment, not exactly worldly wise, who decides to spread his wings and decides to do this with the help of Candy and Wally with the necessary things ahead. A coming of age in the making I think...

Then the story about Homer gets bogged down in a meaningless episode on the apple plantation where little more happens than a perfunctory love affair with Candy. Especially the last one is trouble in the making. It will ultimately be about the tour de force of Dr. Larch to persuade Homer to come back to the place where he is needed, which is his home, which he understands better than anyone and where perhaps his calling lies, yet Homer does not seem to be persuaded. It will be about the difficulty he has with the abortion, and the fact that this is being forced on him a bit, and the while away will be his own doubts towards the clear 'calling '. The big problem as far as I'm concerned is that Homer doesn't appeal for a moment as a character, little happens and the whole thing starts off without a hitch.

No, although there may be a layered message in it that a person has to mature, be something/grow into something and not escape his calling or destiny, The Cider House Rules is a drama that completely passes me by and its Oscar rating don't show it, feel free to say a saltless drama without pinch. This one isn't coming back anytime soon.

Too slow and too good for me. Nice cast, good acting, but gosh, that Homer… so dutiful! Get a life! Everything else very solid.
