The Constant Gardener plot

"Love. At any cost."

In a remote part of northern Kenya, the horribly mutilated corpse of young British Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) is found. Her traveling companion, a local doctor, is nowhere to be seen, and soon there is talk of a crime of passion. Tessa's husband Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), a timid and unambitious diplomat, doesn't believe his wife was committing adultery and decides to do everything in his power to uncover the truth behind his wife's murder. His quest culminates in a personal odyssey, in which he constantly puts his own life on the line. Gradually, Justin discovers that both he and his wife were spiders in a web of far-reaching international intrigue and conspiracy.

Well-made film about ruthless exploitation by the pharmaceutical industry but also about love.

Atmospheric, handsome construction and with impressive camera work (the slums!).

Excellent renditions by Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz.

John le Carre, author of the book on which the film is based, is said to have cited the film as the best on-screen adaptation of a novel.

First 45 minutes very nice, but Meirelles loses focus completely at a certain point. What begins as a pleasant thriller ends as a kind of weak political drama.

setback.

Meirelles managed to make a great film in Brazil, unfortunately he clearly feels much less comfortable in Africa. Where Cidade still sparkled, this film feels very forced and angular. A typical Hollywood product, but not made in America.

Clearly a movie "with a message", but it doesn't really get across. It is much too sentimental, too thick and too in your face for that. Some subtlety, both in terms of imagery, soundtrack and acting, would have done the film well, but apparently that was not possible.

It's one of those typical films that generally does well, but after half an hour I had seen it again. Fairly boring, by the numbers and without too much conviction. As far as I'm concerned, this would have worked much better as a documentary, although it's not easy for them to remain objective either.
