Nice!

I think a lot of people are turning off due to a lack of Marvel & DC in the cinema, and their frustrations are being vented on these types of films. Not much else can be made of it, because although this film is not exactly original (horror genre, you know), the execution is very strong, even refined at times.

Okay, it's a slow burner. Little or no gore and it's not terribly scary either. But when a new nanny starts in a large country house with only an old cleaning lady and two rather unworldly children, you know from the start that you are dealing with a film that mainly focuses on atmosphere. And Sigismondi absolutely does not disappoint.

Visually it is very attractive. Beautiful camera work, great lighting and perfect use of the setting. The CG wasn't bad either. Soundtrack fits in seamlessly with this. Although the plot itself moves quite slowly, there is nothing to complain about in terms of atmosphere. The acting is also more than decent, the entire cast does a good job.

You can draw out the story blindly, but the final act also makes an impression. Strong film by Sigismondi, the current average (1.68) is simply ridiculous, even for MM. In any case, fans of more stylish and atmospheric horror will not be short of anything here.

3.5*

Well...if this film already has a rating of 2.33*...what do you give films that are not produced cinema worthy in terms of camera work, sound and overall production?

The Turning certainly appealed to me. Besides the fact that it all looks (and sounds) good, there is also nothing to criticize about the acting. In addition, suspense and tension were present, and there are nice jump scares here and there, but not too many. As a seasoned horror viewer, I found this film quite scary.

Okay, the remote haunted house, we've seen that before and it's a bit cliché.

However, I suspect that the reason for the low average score is the abrupt and fairly unexpected ending.
The ending is left relatively open: is there really something going on with those kids and the haunted house, or is leading actress Kate just crazy? There are indications for both scenarios. Some of the kids' actions are very crazy, such as faking a drowning in the pool, the comment about Kate's hidden tattoo (or could she have imagined it?) and Miles' comment 'stop the car or I'll kill you' (but that too could be imagination).
My interpretation is that there was definitely something not quite right in the house, but that it wasn't too bad and nanny Kate experienced it all more intensely due to a mental disorder and ultimately went crazy.
But admittedly, with a closed ending where she set the house on fire, I would have been satisfied too.

Anyway, good horror movie, quality, don't be put off by the ridiculous average and turn up the volume for the good sound.

Film reminded me a bit of The Others by Amenábar, classic horror Slow, visually beautiful and entertaining. All points were neatly ticked off, not really anything new, but decent execution, good acting and an ending that distinguishes the film from other similar films. Low score here surprises me a bit, I must say.
