The Quiet plot

"Isn't it time everyone hears your secrets?"

Dot is a deaf and dumb teenage girl who is also an orphan. She ends up in the family of her godmother and their daughter Nina. At first glance, this seems like a happy average family, but Dot soon discovers that everything is not right in this family.

“All I wanted was to be invisible.”

Fine. The Quiet is not really exciting and a certain twist is actually not a twist (raise your finger who really thought Dot was deaf and dumb). What happens between father/daughter comes as no surprise, but the actors do a good job and the director creates an oppressive atmosphere. Belle, Cuthbert, Donovan and Falco know what to do with the material and the ending is an anticlimax, but it is delivered strongly. I expected another twist in the story (battle between Belle and Cuthbert?), but it ends without a big bang.

There is an eerie atmosphere about this film, which suffers from a weak screenplay and weak acting. You soon realize that the girl's alleged disability is fake. In addition, the crux of the story (the incest) barely receives any attention. The climax comes suddenly out of the blue and what follows is too crazy for words. In short, a mediocre film.

Camille Belle and Elisha Cuthbert play charming and intriguing characters, but Jamie Babbit's direction fails to get the film itself anywhere near off the ground. This is mainly reflected in the design of the thriller element, because it is slow and looks predictable. Moreover, the other characters such as Martin Donovan and Edie Falco hardly exude any quirkiness, which means that the escalating chemistry is not convincing. Babbit's direction seems a bit lackluster when it comes to building up pressure and tension, because a certain sense of threat is never created. The relationship building between Belle and Cuthbert is successful, especially considering the limited playing time they have for it. The pace increases as the last fifteen minutes pass, but before that you watch a film for a long time that simply fails to make any sense despite its disturbing themes. The visual look also looks very unfinished and clichéd.
