"By his wounds, we were healed."

The Passion of The Christ is a film about the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The film opens in the Olive Garden (Gethsemane) where Jesus goes to pray after the Last Supper. Jesus resists the temptations of Satan. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with charges of sacrilege and sentence him to death.

Difficult movie to rate. Let's start with the simplest first. You can always contact Mel Gibson to have a strong technical film made with an eye for detail. As in Apocalypto, Hacksaw Ridge or Braveheart, no expense is spared to deliver its message. It is also characteristic of The passion of the Christ that a lot of time and attention has gone into editing and directing. The images are extremely accurate. It all looks fine. Also the fact that Aramaic and Latin is spoken is almost unique and contributes to the authenticity of the film. Just like in Apocalypto, it's to Mel Gibson's credit not to have simply switched to English.

On the other hand, the question can be asked what message Mel Gibson wanted to convey with this film. What's behind it? It is not without reason that he has literally put up a bad blood with this film with the very explicit and at times horrific torture of Jesus. Those barbs, for example. Here and there it was just too much and you can ask yourself whether that was really necessary. It is not for nothing that he has been given his dubious nickname "Bad Mel" or "Bloody Mel" because of this.

Christ who died for the sins of mankind. Gibson succeeds in reflecting as a viewer. A film that can literally lie on your stomach and it's not because of the chips or Cola. Finally, a big compliment to Caviezel, who gives an excellent shape to the suffering Jesus figure. Little appreciation for his performance during film festivals, by the way, but that probably has to do with the controversy of the film, not so much with his acting itself ...

Just short of 4.0*, but certainly a nice 3.5*.

What a good but above all brutal film...!

It's really nice if you can portray this story like that.

After a somewhat confused start, it became more and more gripping and very oppressive.

The torture of Jesus became more and more horrible, but also the "taking the pain" and not judging the people, was certainly poignant to see!

The acting performances were therefore of excellent quality, but the camera work certainly also contributed to this.

A minus point was the not enough presentation of the characters, with some it was not immediately clear who they were and that disturbed the story slightly.

It was also a bit of a shame that, when it's such a well-developed story, there wouldn't be a slightly longer intro and ending.

Now only the agony of Jesus was highlighted with a self-complete ending for those who know the stories.

But it should be clear that this way is just "very good"!

The film can also be easily disconnected from the "faith story" and shows very well what people were and are capable of when thinking differently and gives room to think about it ......

Very good!

8.5/9-

4.5*
