Interesting film about a curious, idiosyncratic teacher at a girls' boarding school. Maggie Smith plays her eccentric role skillfully, although the "nice" nature of her mannerisms wears off after a while. The infatuation with Mussolini and Francofits her eccentric character perfectly, but is nevertheless quite painful. Despite that, an entertaining film with good acting by Pamela Franklin and a pleasant reunion after a long time with Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter).

Excellent film about a free spirited teacher at an all girls school who has dedicated her life to her students. The film starts off quite light (with some subtle humor here and there), but as the story progresses it becomes more serious in tone. Some strong scenes and an Oscar winning role for Maggie Smith, but it is Pamela Franklin who steals the scenes in the second half.

Maybe not exactly my kind of movie, but you come across something every now and then. And in this case it was the book, which I saw a week or so after I got it was also made into a movie. Ideally I would rather read the book first, but this time it was the other way around.

Maggie Smith has some very beautiful scenes, for sure. But also some that seem a bit strange to me. Or is that because the story is set in a completely different time, and in an environment that is foreign to me? Not impossible. At least it is not immediately clear why exactly her performance was Oscar-worthy - the rest of the cast also has some very beautiful scenes, after all. The often somewhat underrated Gordon Jackson for example. Or Pamela Franklin.

And now to read the book. That won't take long, by the way, it's only thin.
