What a special experience! Just saw this 'Nightingale' at the Sundance film festival in Park City, Utah. And as far as I'm concerned, it's the best film I've seen at the festival so far. Very impressed. A tough, gruesome film that carries an almost perfect tone. A lot of people quickly walked out of the room and halfway through the film was stopped because a guest - who was blown out of time by all this - had to be removed, after which more people left. I think the victim is doing fine, so really fantastic all in all this. I thought it was a very strong revenge film that puts all emotions to the test. Baykali Ganambarr steals the show as far as I'm concerned. 'Badabook' was already great, but Kent exceeds all my expectations here. An experience not to forget.

Jennifer Kent has already set the bar high with The Babadook. A very good horror film already shook up its sleeve as a debut. You can then expect that she would no longer reach this level with the next film. However, nothing could be further from the truth, because The Nightingale has become a very gripping and impressive drama. The colonial atmosphere is emphatically present. The ratio in which it was filmed is also atypical these days. It's a melancholy film, but after you've watched it I was left with damn, this was strong. What an acting performance by Aisling Franciosi. Rarely have I seen the hate splash from the screen like this. It's all bam in the face too.

With The Nightingale, you as a viewer do not get a typical revenge flick for the choosing. It's much more than that. It's a pretty layered movie. Thus a kind of connection is forged between the Letteremairrener man and Clare through their shared pain. The racism and prejudice are melting in the sun, not immediately but gradually. Another thing I can appreciate is that Jennifer Kent isn't trying to shock for the sake of shocking. She finds a nice golden mean. Whether The Nightingale is for everyone? I don't think so but I think it's one of the best movies of this year. Yep, sure!

Raw action thriller, set in a time when Australia (including Tasmania) was the place where the English dumped their criminals. The film drops some stitches here and there, but that should not spoil the fun. All the more so because as a counterpart to the violent actions, attention is also paid to the changing interaction between the two protagonists. In any case, more than worth it, if only to see how disgraceful the Westerners treated the original inhabitants (as in almost all colonized areas). Nice poster by the way.
