This film hits home hard.

You have to see this for yourself to believe it.

I can totally understand why some people can't finish watching this movie.

Good film again from Mortier.

The emphasis is a little more on the drama here, which makes the rest of the film a bit more subdued, but Mortier delivers quality on all levels. That's four times in a row, which makes him by far my favorite Flemish director, second only to Du Welz at national level.

The film is not without genre, especially towards the end, the realism makes way for a more cinematic narrative. I was happy with it in itself, because in the end I prefer that approach, but the mix of both made it all quite moving.

Visually well done, sound design is of a high standard and Dooms' acting is really impressive. The accents are always an added value in Mortier's films, although I don't know what a more international audience will pick up from that. In any case, I enjoyed it again, an impressive and memorable film.

4.0* and a extensive review

Crushing!

Skunk is being advertised a lot, partly because of the 1+1 free promotion, and I wonder whether everyone is prepared for the film. A superlative version of De Alasheid der Dingen (Film, 2009) is one thing, but at the end it was just a little more crescendo and I heard several expressions of dismay resound in the packed room.

This is one that sticks from Mortier, who also scored so well at the time with that other filmed book Ex Drummer (Film, 2007). Technically very beautiful, with the camera sitting very close to the skin. The soundtrack is also strong, with the final scene being the highlight. All credits go to Thibaud Dooms by the way. What an acting performance! It remains striking how loyal such disrupted young people sometimes still are. Liam's answer says it all: "It's home".

Nice that ode to Scalps (Film, 1983) when Liam Gossé had to discuss his favorite film in front of the class. It may be the only film he knows. Very raw, hard film in which life as it is, "the institution" and "my marginal home" are reviewed. Also beautiful is the editing work between the home situation and the present. You will just be a care provider or educator. It's hard not to be exhausted or without bruises (literally) ...

Strong drama, especially in the core of the film: life and work in the closed youth institution is presented in a particularly realistic and precise manner with stunning acting by Thibaut Dooms and Natali Broods.

The horror scenes - flashbacks of Liam's home situation - worked a little less well for me: Sarah Vandeursen and Colin Van Eeckhout push the boundaries of overacting a little too emphatically. The unusually brutal ending is also a bit on the edge in that respect.

This film really hits home hard.

Strong acting, a story that makes you silent & a very hard ending.

Highly recommended, but you have to be able to take a beating.
