Shadows plot

"A film not to be missed."

Manhattan, during the beat period. Benny is a dark young man who finds himself in hip circles, but also regularly gets into trouble. His sister Lelia has a lighter tint and his brother Hugh is a singer who just can't seem to get it right. Lelia falls in love with a white boy, Tony, who becomes fearful of prejudice after meeting her family. The family ties should bring comfort to Lelia.

I also got to know Shadows through the five-part box by Cassavetes. His debut film, by the way, for which reportedly little preparation was put. Natural, authentic and purely improvised. It is almost impossible to imagine these days.

The film centers on Lelia and her two brothers, one a bit darker than the other. I could have guessed how this colorful trio was related to each other in their families, but that's beside the point. Tony must have wondered about this as well. The racial undertones only came across to me to a limited extent. I expected it to be more explicit. The story - if you can call it one - meanders along aimlessly, which caused my attention to wane.

Beautiful locations with the 50s feeling of Manhattan and the beautiful black and white images. I am not a jazz lover at all, not even for music tout court, but here it was a hit, also because I found the story just a bit too poor. Still, I look forward to his other films, hopefully the feeling will also crescendo. Just enough for Shadows as far as I am concerned.

Special film, almost 180° different from what was produced in Hollywood at the time. Respect for John Cassavetes for committing himself to this project, against the current. And not only that, I also find it a pleasant viewing experience. Natural dialogues by unknown actors, the jazzy double bass on the soundtrack, the street views of New York, the gritty image grain, and the for that time downright provocative plot line around an interracial relationship (among other loose plot lines). I was not bored for a second, there is always something happening in this snapshot of the lives of several young Americans.

Nice film about two brothers and a sister during the beat period in New York. The film is a bit messy, especially at the beginning. The jazz music fits perfectly with the whole. This directorial debut of John Cassavetes is clearly a film that undoubtedly showed a different sound at the time (realistically depicted and of course acting), but that did not completely captivate me.
