The story of four boys with their own problems, who together look for the body of a dead boy that is said to be lying somewhere. As if it is the most normal thing, a few days on a search and even with a weapon. Only in America... But the teenagers are teenagers of course and the problems are partly recognizable. The goal doesn't matter, it's the trip together that shapes them.

The film lives on a decent story by Stephen King, one of his exceptional drama stories and not horror. The four teenagers are not the strongest actors, they will never be top actors. The whole is not bad, it exudes a typical American atmosphere and reflects nostalgia for a childhood that I did not experience myself.

What a nice understated drama this is, after a story by Stephen King that I've read often enough. The man can write not only horror but also moving stories about loss, friendship and aging.

Slowly the film starts around the four boys, different and all with their own background and troubles, who plan to search for the body of a missing boy. Along with the four boys, the local thugs decide to look for the body as well, and Ace, the unscrupulous type, terror of the neighborhood and leader of a group of suckers who are even more afraid of him if necessary, is like that again' a typical Stephen King character. Well done by Sutherland by the way. Beautiful and entrusted to King is the interaction and balance between characters and their behaviour.

Once on the road, the film paints a nice picture of these guys who go through a lot. In the midst of their own youthfulness and childish behavior, a lot is happening to them. They get to know each other better, understand each other, have sympathy for each other, stand up for each other and look after each other. Crash course coming of age for that matter. There is also the loss on Gordie's side that brings things like processing, grief and guilt. Quite a lot if you ask me and this is performed in an excellent way by the four young lads, presented in an atmospheric way with beautiful music.

The beautiful Stand By Me by Ben E. King provides a last moment of goosebumps and completes this wonderfully modest drama and I can only say that this is a beautiful film especially because I never like the youthful perspective very much but here anyway presented in a beautiful and engaging manner.

In my humble opinion one of the best movies ever made about teenagers. In all their awkwardness, the young people seem lifelike to me: like to act tough, but essentially vulnerable and insecure. The interlude with the cake competition is not very successful, because it does not fit in with the rest of the film.

I also think it's a shame that the soundtrack contains only a few fragments of the music from the late 50s, early 60s, because I have fond musical memories of that time.
