Beautiful film about a boy who starts at a new school and has difficulty making friends. A deserved classic that has not lost any of its power, partly because it is a story of all times (even though we are now generations further). The youth (misunderstood by their parents) is portrayed well. James Dean plays an iconic role, but Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo should certainly not be left unmentioned.

James Dean was the comet of the rock 'n' roll generation. Method acting was on the rise, which involved improvisation and drawing on personal experience and emotions. Jim Stark has an asymmetrical posture with tense shoulders and a hanging head. He doesn't seem to be standing on his feet. He rebels, but against what? He grew up in a bourgeois environment in a suburb, where he lacks for nothing materially.

The lack of a strong father figure is put forward as an explanation. Jim's father is on his knees cleaning with the apron on. In response, Jim wants to act as tough and masculine as possible. He especially doesn't want to be called chicken or coward. This leads to the chicken race against the guys in leather jackets. Actually, these actors are five years too old to play an adolescent. Judy (Natalie Wood) is the one who helps Jim in his development because she also appreciates his sensitive side - something she doesn't find enough with her father. The most twisted character is "Plato" (Sal Mineo), who grows up without parents, has few friends and seems to have gay feelings. The way of telling arouses sympathy for characters who nevertheless commit nonsensical acts.

The camera sometimes shows an unbalanced, subjective point of view, such as when Jim is upside down in the sofa. The color red makes the three main characters stand out against the background and symbolizes their vulnerability. Jim and Judy sometimes wear a red coat; Plato is wearing one red sock, which illustrates his confusion. The whole story takes place within twenty-four hours. The empty pool is the same as in Sunset Blvd. (1950). The mansion stands for the urge to flee, the planetarium for the insignificance of man in the universe.
