Radical plot

An elementary school teacher in a village in Mexico decides to completely change course and use 'radical' methods to inspire his students and offer a better future. That's not so easy if the school where you work doesn't have computers and the headmaster isn't exactly your biggest fan. Based on a true story.

This film reminded me of the compelling drama Stand and Deliver. Both films are about a teacher in a deprived neighborhood who still manages to stimulate his underprivileged students with an unconventional approach. Not as gripping as Ramón Menéndez's film from 1988, but again a bull's eye.

After working for five years at an elementary school in the Mexican city of Matamoros, Sergio Juárez Correa [Eugenio Derbez] lost his passion. He decides to radically change his teaching method, among other things by focusing on students' learning questions and by using the entire school grounds as a teaching space. Of course, this comes under great criticism, but headmaster Chucho [Daniel Haddad] decides to continue supporting Sergio. Modern variation on Dangerous Minds with children growing up in a neighborhood where poverty and crime go hand in hand. Seems too good to be true, but it isn't. The epilogue makes it clear how a number of children fared. A convincing plea for a drastic reform of our primary education. It's about time!

A beautiful true story about a teacher who has a controversial way of teaching, but who steals the hearts of the students and ours as viewers. In a small Mexican village where student performance is far below the national average and crime among the youth is far above average, new teacher Sergio tries a different way of teaching that pays off. Of course there is also the usual resistance and things are not made easy for them. The (true) story of the poverty-stricken Paloma Noyola is very special. Unfortunately, I think the film is overdramatized a little too often. The children are constantly coming up with quotes as if they were the most brilliant philosophers. The ending is so over-sentimental that it is clearly the filmmaker's intention to make us cry in our cinema seats, but I thought it was a bit too much and it was counterproductive. Overall a beautiful film where the strength lies mainly in the story itself.
