Quadrophenia plot

"A Way of Life"

London 1964. Jimmy and his buddies are Mods. They split their time between dancing and fighting the Rockers. Jimmy, however, struggles with his seemingly pointless existence, which is only alleviated by the friendship with his buddies who are in the same boat. He is confused, angry with everything and everyone, searching for his identity and on the verge of self-destruction.

Saw it too long ago to have any memory of it, and besides, I didn't know the album at the time. Revisited now, and it was a very different film than I actually expected, with less music to guide the images and much more serious drama. If you see this film as a portrayal of how a rather hopeless young person tries to deal with finding a direction in his life while the soulless working-class existence threatens him, you could say that Quadrophenia is not essentially different than Saturday night and Sunday morning 19 years earlier or Trainspotting 17 years later, but the background of Mods versus Rockers, the associated style sensitivity, the emphasis on music and the portrait of a time in which both the director and the four Who members grew up, this is a fundamentally different film. Phil Daniels is Jimmy as I have seen few actors identify with their role, his group of friends is sharply drawn, and the dramatic tension is maintained throughout the film as far as I am concerned. Still a fairly intense experience that I don't find dated at all. And again, Phil Daniels makes the film.

Seen via the Universal Blu-ray from 2011, with excellent image and sound + Dutch subtitles on my version + audio commentary by Franc Roddam, Phil Daniels and Leslie Ash + two nice documentaries of 45 minutes in total. It is remarkable that the audio commentary discusses how unpolitically correct some of the characters' comments about the only Jamaican character (Ferdy the dealer) are, but that no one says anything about how common his presence is in an otherwise all-white group. was and whether that says something about Mod culture.

Excellent film in which the Mods are often at odds with the Rockers. A beautiful period document about a youth culture from England in the mid-1960s. Also a coming-of-age film with a rather striking ending. Excellent casting with some well-known figures at the start of their careers (including Sting's film debut).

An iconic film for the mod revival, I believe, the scene surrounding Paul Weller et al. As I feared, it is not all that great, no special story and far too long a running time, but as an atmospheric sketch it is quite successful. The scenes in Brighton are especially worth seeing, with a funny supporting role from the young Sting. It reminded me of Northern Soul in many ways.

And although everything is of course based on The Who's album of the same name, that theatrical '70s rock really does not fit the period depicted at all. Still a bit strange. Their '60s hit My Generation, on the other hand, fits like a glove.
