"No means 'NO'!"

After a number of notorious rape cases in India led to massive protests and became world news, legislation has been gradually introduced in that country to better protect women and punish perpetrators more severely. This film fits into that context, which seems to me not only intended for domestic use in India, but also far beyond.

Apart from that, it is a fascinating film about corruption and prejudices regarding alleged offensive behavior of women in public. The second part in particular, in which male chauvinism is peeled away and exposed bit by bit, really appealed to me. This is mainly due to the skillful direction of Chowdhury and to the convincing performances, those of Taapsee Pannu and good old Amitabh Bachchan in particular. An impressive film.

NB! When the credits start, the film is not over yet.

"No means 'NO'!"

Ai... I don't know why I started it... I'm not a fan of bollywood cinema, but because of the high rating I went to see it. I understand that this subject is taboo-breaking, it must have been a risky undertaking for the makers and the cast. But if I have to appreciate the film purely cinematically, then it doesn't hold up. The acting is sub-par, the soundtrack comes across as forcing, the camera work is boring, there's not much you can do about it. *2.5

Moderate junk. I don't like Indian cinema and this reminds me why: if you're making a film about rape and you have trouble pronouncing the word sex, don't start it. The film is shrouded in the taboo atmosphere that it seems to want to break, manipulates the viewer in a ridiculously staged court case that seems completely unbelievable (in which the judge even clearly seems to side with the ladies) and is laced with unnecessary sentiment. It's all manageable, but it doesn't make much of an impression.
