I've always found it difficult to decide for myself which Charles Dickens story I liked best. In any case, I think Olivier Twist is one of the most impressive. This film adaptation by Roman Polanski has the great advantage that it follows the story quite closely, whereas other directors and/or screenwriters sometimes follow their own fantasy and thereby detract from Dickens' masterpieces.

Moreover, Polanski uses beautiful scenery to depict 19th century London.

The almost unrecognizable Ben Kinsley is masterful, but Barney Clark in the title role is also very good. Pay special attention to the telling expression of young Oliver during the opening scene at the gate. Never to forget, so beautiful!

A solid film, which is nowhere special, but nevertheless nice to look away.

I have been familiar with the story of Oliver Twist since childhood. Nevertheless, I have never found it a really impressive story. Other year I have Oliver! in which the same story is presented in a musical way. I didn't really think that was a success. At least Polanski is doing better.

He knows how to create a strong British atmosphere here. Furthermore, the acting performances are solid, with Kingsley in particular fulfilling his role well. I've always found Fagin the most interesting character too, because he's so colored. He has his good and bad qualities and you can see that nicely here.

But even though it's not a bad movie, it doesn't get very good anywhere. It's solid craftsmanship, but nothing more. Some directors would sign up for such a film, but Polanski can do much better than this.

3.0*

Roman Polanski falls through his own lower limit with Oliver Twist. It all looks good, but the characters are quite caricatured, which made it difficult for me to go along with the story. Not a bad film, rather childish, but I just expect more from someone like Polanski...
