"A Cast of Inspired Players in Award Winning Performances!"
Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1939. The itinerant and desperate hairdresser Will Kobling wants to get rid of his poverty and steals £100, which he sees on a table outside a house. With this stolen money, he pays a debt to a local store that his status-attached wife Kit has built up there. When the police learn that the stolen money came from that local store, Pilleger, the store owner, blackmails Will. This blackmail gets out of hand and Will kills Pilleger. The locals then hunt for Will.
