Ni Chaînes Ni Maîtres plot
In the year 1759, Mauritius is in the hands of the French colonists. The enslaved population lives in fear and toils on the sugar cane plantations. This also applies to the teenage girl Mati and her father Massamba. Mati refuses to accept her fate and flees the plantation in search of the part of the island where a community of fugitives is said to be living. In the meantime, the plantation owner hires the ruthless Madame La Victoire to track down Mati. Massamba has no choice but to escape himself to find his daughter first.

Decent debut film. Not something to cheer you up. There are some hard scenes, what do you expect with the theme of slavery? Here we are on the island of Mauritius in 1759, but the story could take place in any colony. Two slaves, Massamba and his daughter Mati, have had enough of slavery and flee from the sugar cane plantation of Larcenet, for which they risk death. A bounty hunter and tracker, Madame La Victoire, is ordered to arrest them. The only possible salvation is a supposed Maroon community that is supposed to be found somewhere on the island.
There is nothing wrong with the direction. The film reads like an adventure film and some more dramatic scenes provide a suitable counterbalance, but Ni Chaines Ni Maîtres inevitably stands in the shadow of better slavery films such as 12 Years a Slave or Amistad. The final shots of the rebellious slaves jumping off a cliff to their deaths (rather to die free than live in slavery) is a solid closer.
