What a sad shit country that America. This is not about choosing freedom or touring around like Native Americans used to do. No, this is about losing everything, working the snot in mind so that Jeff Bezos can add another billion.

This is about a government that doesn't give a fuck that whole villages just go to pieces because "the market" collapses. People become displaced and pull towards each other. Because what else do you need? And if that is your life, you are no longer used to functioning "normally" in society after years. What do you think this does to your self-confidence of being the scum of the earth?

If you think this is a boring movie or think this is like into the wild then you haven't understood it. This is a movie about what happens to the "losers" in a country like the US. And show that these are very beautiful people. who need more attention and help. That's why you win Oscars.

I can imagine that for us this will not have the impact it has for Americans. Because it's all a little better organized here. But if you don't understand why this movie wins an Oscar then I don't think you have understood what this movie is about. If all goes well, you feel everything for these people. Pity, respect and dislike your companies like amazon and the state. Bunch of filthy suckers who would even sell their mother. Everything for the mega profits and then you like people like Fern who can't go anywhere and can be abused to survive. Disgusting really. And if a movie stirs up so much, it's a good movie.

In the year when everyone had to put dreams away, say goodbye to a life (for a while) and adapt to the state of things, to the other, to the loneliness…in that year 'Nomadland' do win an Oscar, don't you?

It is an unusually unpretentious film for such a great price, an ode to ordinary people, an atypical glorification of a different kind of Americanism than that of big capital or unsurpassed success. 'Nomadland' glorifies, punctually, explores, describes: the fraternization, the solidarity, the ordinary goodness, the terror of memories, the victimization of a plundering capitalism, the simplicity, the pure humanity of... .well, whose? Contemporary nomads.

Those who don't belong anywhere, can't settle anywhere, can't get a foothold anywhere, the peace is over...they are another America, a United States with a face, a name, a story, a lot of misery where - despite the circumstances - they still know how to handle something.

Chloé Zhao hardly makes it special, and yet 'Nomandland' is a small big movie. A character study with little plot, little continuity…call it a nomadic narrative style, from somewhere to nowhere, especially a lot on the way…and you won't be bored for a second.

Right, moving. Therefore not yet masterful. But still: moving.

3.5*
