Becoming Led Zeppelin plot

Both the individual and collective lives of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and the late John Bonham, the members of one of the most successful hard rock bands, Led Zeppelin, are meticulously followed and chronicled. From the early sixties, when they were taking their tentative first steps on the local British music scene, playing small clubs throughout the UK and scoring a few hits, to a meeting in the summer of 1968 for a rehearsal together that would ultimately change their lives forever. This documentary then follows them up to the height of their fame in 1970.

The best part is the razor-sharp image in large format, only then do you see how young those guys were in the late 1960s.

Typical documentary with some talking heads and archive footage, preferably mixed with some images of society at the time to create a picture of the times. Really nothing special. But this one clearly rises above many of its kind for two reasons: fun and focus.

The focus is mainly that the documentary only focuses on the first years: the youth, the formation of the group and the first success. No pieces of decay and dealing with fame and heroin but mainly focused on making music and producing by Page. That is fascinating, especially because there is enough interesting stuff to tell. For example about the chemistry between drummer and bassist and how their songs came about that way. And that is supported by images and especially sound of those songs.

But the focus is also on the fact that only the three artists (and Bonham via an old recording) are allowed to speak and they clearly enjoy talking about the past. So no burned-out or uninspiring people who are allowed to talk about a band and their own role there, but just the musicians themselves who mainly talk about music. And all three clearly enjoyed it. That makes this just a nice documentary to watch.

The pacing is also great with a good mix of documentary and just great music, making those 120 minutes fly by. 3.5*.

The title says it all; this documentary does not create a comprehensive picture of the legendary rock band but mainly gives a detailed look at the early years, from origins to the first success. It could have been edited a bit tighter, certain musical parts nag on for too long in my opinion, but then again, I am not a real fan. The nice interviews with the surviving band members of the first hour make up for a lot. Also clever how the interview with drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980, is incorporated into the documentary. This actually provides a nice emotional moment towards the end.

The album 'Led Zeppelin II', released in October 1969, meant the definitive breakthrough for Led Zeppelin. Guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones, frontman Robert Plant and audio recordings of drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980 (and who rarely gave interviews anyway) tell the individual history of the band members and the musical journey that Led Zeppelin has made since The Yardbirds (of which Page was guitarist) decided to call it quits. In terms of design and visual style, it has been reminiscent of an episode of 'Behind The Music' for a long time, but unique footage and (especially) registrations of live performances make this a treat for fans and make it clear to the uninitiated (regardless of taste or preference) how virtuoso and progressive this legendary group already was. So see this in the cinema or with a decent sound system.
