Nina Simone is a musician who I mainly know for her music and nothing else. Sometimes this is not necessary, but it does help to see the music in the right perspective. Just think of Mississippi Godamn or Ain't Got No, I Got Life, which now has a lot more meaning. For me, Nina Simone is a cross between a musical activist like Harry Belafonte and an artist who lived at double speed like Kurt Cobain or Amy Winehouse. How she lived for music as a child, was brilliant in her own way with a large dose of charisma. To eventually withdraw from the hectic world. While Cobain and Winehouse (and many others) almost gave their lives to it at a young age, Simone's life went even further. No longer the singer of yesteryear, but fortunately and rightly the respect she once had. Clearly someone of her time.
The documentary is beautiful and fascinating, with sufficient attention to the music itself. Not unimportant in a music documentary. With the daughter, ex-husband and some friends as witnesses in the front row. Fortunately, there is also plenty of footage and sound recordings to let Miss Simone speak for herself. Looking for the answer to the question. 'What happened Miss Simone?'...

First-class Netflix documentary about the life and work of singer/activist Nina Simone. Her turbulent life is of course a rewarding subject for a documentary maker, but it must be said that director Liz Garbus has turned it into something very special. Both her musical and political lives are thoroughly highlighted, without shying away from her largely unhappy private life. Unfortunately, it proves once again: the unhappier the artist, the better the music.

This good, penetrating documentary tells the story of the rise and turbulent life of Nina Simone.
It starts when she is a very little girl playing in church where she is "discovered".
The documentary is set in the segregated United States, the civil rights movement and how it is becoming increasingly committed.
Her personal life and the unstable relationships with her husband and daughter are also discussed in detail.
Recommended for fans of music documentaries.
