Sherpa plot

"Some Live to Climb. They Climb to Live."

In 2014, director Jennifer Peedom was working on a documentary about the Sherpas of Mount Everest when the largest avalanche in recent history occurred on the mountain, killing 16 Sherpas. It changed the focus of the documentary, but not so much the one that wanted to portray the growing unrest of the Sherpa community. Unrest created by the fatal accidents, which are only increasing as the number of expeditions has increased in recent years. The documentary shows the split in which the Sherpas and their families find themselves.

Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became world famous as a member of Edmund Hillary's expedition that was the first to summit Mount Everest. Tenzing was a modest, simple, friendly man who defined the image of the Sherpa for decades. Mount Everest has now become a magnet for tens of thousands of mountain climbers and foreign operators frequently use Sherpas as preparers and guides on expeditions. This has created more prosperity for the Sherpas and in 2014 a generation has emerged with completed education. When 16 Sherpas die in an avalanche, this new generation decides to take action: they demand that the climbing season be stopped immediately to honor their dead. This leads to misunderstanding among operators, who soon realize that they cannot do anything without the help of the Sherpas.

Jennifer Peedom's documentary starts as a portrait of Sherpa culture based on conversations with family members, friends and acquaintances of Tenzing Norgay, but does not quite link this with the protest actions. Her film therefore seems like a mix of two different documentaries on the same theme. But she does painfully expose how little respect operators and customers still appear to have for the culture and wishes of the Sherpas, even after the disaster.

Largely fascinating, visually spectacular documentary about the Sherpas who work on and around Mount Everest. During filming in 2014, the largest avalanche in the mountain's recent history occurred, killing 16 Sherpas. It changed the focus of the documentary, something that turned out to be a curse and a blessing at the same time. The political aftermath of the tragedy is of course important to show, but does not exactly translate into fascinating footage. This makes the last half hour of the documentary a bit tough.
