Boston, the 1920s. Times when alcohol flows freely, bullets fly around your ears and everyone wants to leave their mark on the world. Joe Coughlin is the youngest son of a prominent police officer who has turned his back on his family and seeks refuge in the crime among the city's most feared mobsters. Apart from money and prestige, however, his new lifestyle has a downside, Joe finds himself in a world where he cannot trust anyone and where he has to take an early death into the bargain.

The Affleck movie. He produced, directed, co-wrote the story, plays the lead role and even does the voice-over. There is only one thing wrong with this movie, and that is Ben Affleck! I think his role is by far the worst in this print, luckily the rest of the cast does a lot better. The story is not very interesting, an average gangster movie actually. I have to admit that the decor looks good (even if those suits don't look good on him), and the chases in the old cars are quite entertaining. Other than that, not much soup. I also much prefer to watch Casey, who also plays a lot better in my opinion. Not enough.

Good film in which a gangster makes a name for himself in Florida during Prohibition. A simple story, but since enough has happened, the film remains entertaining throughout the entire length and the tone is also right. The characters are well developed and the decoration is also fine (the film is set in the late 1920s and early 1930s). Ben Affleck is doing better here as a director than as an actor.

Standard crime film about Prohibition during the 1920s. The main problem is that director Ben Affleck is claiming the lead role for himself. That is a crucial error of judgment, because as an actor Affleck lacks the talent to carry a gangster film like this.
“Ordinary” Underdog characterizes this movie. In my opinion an accurate description.
