Pretty okay.

William Monahan may do his best to do a well-known theme and genre in his own way, that while his style isn't that exceptional now, but it does make London Boulevard a film that has some way lingers.

In any case, there is no shortage of well-known (and skilled) actors. Farrell and Knightley are the usual suspects, but also very nice to see, for example, a Thewlis and Marsan at work again. These are gentlemen who rarely put down a bad role, even in lesser films.

The film is a typical British gangster thing, but less flashy and with style and tone. It is a little quieter, just a little more focused on the drama, but not without some black humor and the necessary dose of bawdy language. A fine combination, which unfortunately, in comparison with its genre contemporaries, is just a bit too well-behaved.

But the film certainly entertains. It doesn't take too long, the pace is good, the characters are captivating and the ending is fitting. A happy ending wouldn't have made it a bit too bland, the fact that you as a viewer are hoping for it mainly speaks in favor of the characters.

Monahan shows he has something to offer, but is missing something that really makes his film stand out.

3.0*

“Heard you been lookin' for me...”

London Boulevard is a separate intersection between a Guy Ritchie movie and Carlito's Way. Without the flair and humor of Ritchie, and without the intensity of Carlito. And without Pacino, of course. The film jumps from one topic to the next without getting particularly interesting.

Fortunately, the actors with Farrell and certainly Winstone know what to do with their colorful roles. And Knightley is also nice in a somewhat musty and too small role as a well-known actress. Director Monahan tries it with fast direction, hard action and that raw English slum mentality, but the result is a somewhat messy whole that does not impress. Not even the impressive ending.

Beautiful movie! I say, while it's really not my genre normally!
