cool. And not only because of the pink letters, the creaking of the leather gloves, Los Angeles, the jacket or the almost brilliant opening ride. Although that's already a lot. Refn is quite ambitious with an elegant, expressive visual style. Sophisticated images with more expressive power than the sparse dialogues, even the soundtrack seems to tell more than the characters, but in this way a film gradually develops that mesmerizes.

For example, the slow motion with the two departing mobsters in the garage is something that draws attention anyway. The flip side of that approach is that the simmering relationship between The Driver and Irene teeters on the border of surreal and artificial. There's nothing wrong with Mulligan per se, but it all seems a bit cumbersome as she occupies a somewhat curious position between the mystique that Gosling displays and the rest of the cast.

The scene in the elevator is less affected by this. The enormous contrast, also because of the moody ambiance of the film, cuts in there. Something that applies to all acts of violence. Fierce and furious. I do like the taciturn (arche)types and Gosling comes a long way with this rendition. A little too smooth on the chin, but a fascinating appearance, it must have something to do with the fable of the scorpion and the frog, especially in a, as I said, cool movie.

Refn's style as a director didn't really appeal to me at first and this film actually confirmed all my preconceptions about him. The wafer-thin story takes itself way too seriously and really just a coat rack for some terribly unsubtle symbolism (those masks… although the shot is that you see Gosling with his mask on looking through a mosaic window at Ron Perlman phenomenal), so the film relies entirely on the audiovisual aspect, as I expected. I found the soundtrack quite drapy, but visually it is indeed quite beautiful. Although I thought the blood was very fake, which nullifies the impact of the violent outbursts. Mainly because of the excellent cast and the look of the film, I get a small three stars. It is certainly not all bad, but the masterpiece that many see in it has escaped me.

This film was reviewed last evening as an open-air performance in Arthouse Lux in Nijmegen. Although the images on the big screen did not come into its own, it is still an excellent film. The movie audience on the terrace thought a little differently. Some were shocked by some action scenes. But then again, Drive isn't exactly an arthouse film either. Fans of that prefer drama with not too much violence and certainly not as shown in Drive in which the violence suddenly appears at moments when you do not expect it. For me, that is precisely the strong side of this film which, in addition to excellent acting by Ryan Gosling, also has an excellent soundtrack with the highlight being the song Desire - Under Your Spell

Rating: increased to 4.5*
